Select resources (Biographies, Directories, Indexes, Encyclopedias, etc.) in which Scott C. Holstad has been listed as a notable poet, editor, publisher, expert, etc.… [List not exhaustive; project unending]
Over the past two years, I have been continually surprised to find myself listed in, written about, cataloged and indexed in dozens of reference/resource series and hundreds of editions. The fact that I’ve long used and appeared in a few publication listings, as with the usual major annuals (Poet’s Market, International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses, etc.), at one time may have seemed like the pinnacle to me, but it would take me decades to learn they’re merely some of a massive resource industry so I’ve recently been repeatedly surprised at finding out I am or was listed in so many other series I never heard of or knew about.
The whole thing is a very long story I don’t have time to write and no one will read, but I basically didn’t now about any of these – except the annual market directories from Dustbooks and Writers Digest Books – until years to decades after the fact! No one ever told me, I was never contacted after publication and I was only approached two to three times in memory beforehand about inclusion in something and I was rarely interested so didn’t follow up. And it wasn’t the usual stereotype, which is wrong for the vast majority of these companies. Not only did or have I never ordered or bought anything like these resources (until now, when I’m now scrounging for old, used copies in this project), but NOT ONE Company EVER asked, urged, demanded, required, brought up my ordering or buying any book or product, and if they had I would have laughed and moved on. This all basically happened without my knowledge – not a complaint, but more a sign of wonder perhaps? – just as various identifiers had been created for me decades ago, before I’d even heard of many now long in use. So, just making sure the record’s straight from the beginning…
I won’t take the time or effort then to explain what these various series are if you don’t already know (use a search engine) because I don’t have the time and it would lead me down such a deep rabbit hole, I couldn’t get out for weeks. But I wrote an intro about this Page and it’s here, so I’ll then proceed on to the listings. There are many more reference books and series left out of this document as I have been unable to confirm some of them myself. However, it’s possible this list may still contain an error as it’s tremendously difficult to confirm all by eye in person, particularly as too many of these indexes (individual, not the actual Series) cost anywhere from $800 to $2,000 to even $6,000 each! I have many of these and have viewed many more, so I actually can account for the large majority. Still there is no way to know with accuracy how many resources include or mention Scott Holstad. Those listed here certainly represent the minimum. I’ve learned this is an unending project. Finally, as an FYI, following list of over 45 series is entirely in random order with no intended design or motive.
